Penn Avenue Project Bike Lanes

Residents of 4th Ward Neighborhoods –

This message was received at the office today regarding the current planning for the Penn Corridor Project. It is an update on the progress and in this case specifically related to bike lanes on Penn Avenue.  It will take many years for this Penn Corridor Project to be completed, but along the way decisions are made that will affect the future direction of the project. This discussion about bike lanes is one of those decisions!

If you have an opinion about bike lanes on Penn Avenue North now is the time to let your Council Member know! For the 4th Ward  neighborhoods call or email Council President Barbara Johnson, 612-673-2204 or

Good Afternoon PIC Representatives!

I wanted to again provide an update on action taken at the City of Minneapolis Transportation and Public Works committee yesterday. The committee considered the staff recommendation for a concept layout for Penn Avenue that the Steering Committee recommended in February and County Board approved in April. Staff recommended the Penn layout but did not put forth the Queen bike boulevard layout, after hearing opposition from the bike advocacy groups. Here’s a link to the report (item #14):

Don Pflaum from Minneapolis Public Works introduced the item and fielded questions, Kelly and I presented the process and the roadway recommendation, and Katie Roth from Metro Transit also presented on the C-Line. If you would like to watch the presentation, it is archived on YouTube. The power point is here:

The committee engaged in a spirited discussion, including many comments about the importance of the bike network and policy basis for bike lanes on Penn.  Ultimately, the committee voted to send the item forward without recommendation.  It will now go forward to the City Council Committee of the Whole on Wednesday, August 5th at 10 a.m. and then to the full City Council on Friday, August 7that 9:30 a.m. both will be in City Council Chambers.

We cannot anticipate the outcome but will let you know as soon as we know. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or for more information.
