Reconstruction of the 45-year-old wading pool begins next August
On Dec. 15, 2016, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) of Commissioners approved the concept design of a new wading pool at Matthews Park.
The new 30-by-50-foot pool features zero-depth entry to comply with standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act, four benches, a shade structure and several small play bubblers. It will replace the current pool, which was built in 1970.
Additional shade structures and play features may be added to the design depending on construction bids received over the winter. The whale structure in the current pool cannot be salvaged for the new pool, but MPRB staff are exploring moving it into the playground.
The old pool opens for its final season next June and closes for good when construction begins in August. The new wading pool is expected to be complete by summer 2017.
