Camden Area Construction Updates for 2018

Camden Area Construction Updates for  7/17/2018

42nd Avenue Reconstruction

This is the 2nd and final year of this project, which is completely redoing 42nd Ave N between the Victory Memorial Drive and Lyndale Ave N.     The stretch between Xerxes and Fremont was completed in early June, 2018 and is now open for all traffic.

Work has now begun on the remaining (Phase 3) section of 42nd Ave N, between Fremont and Lyndale.   The first phase has been digging and chopping out the existing layers of road and carting it away.   If you live nearby, you already know that it is LOUD.   Then they will pound down the new gravel base (also very loud and shaking) and finally start adding asphalt layers and curbs.    Please watch the WCNO Facebook page for frequent updates about what to expect every week or so as the project progresses.       More information can be found also at the city project website:   http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/cip/2017/42nd-ave-n-reconstruction

  • Update 7/16/18: For the Month of July, site prep work continues East of Fremont:
    • Activities completed in phase 3 ( Fremont Ave N to Lyndale Ave N)
      • Exploratory digging to verify if there was a conflict on the proposed storm sewer pipes with CenterPoint energy utility.
      • Installed new storm sewer pipes and structures east of Fremont Ave N
      • Removed signal bases and lighting poles
    • Next week schedule (Week of July 16th):
      • Install new storm pipes and structures.
      • Signal work at Fremont Ave N intersection
    • Penn Avenue Construction/C-line

Penn Avenue is getting a facelift to make way for the C-line BRT which will largely replace the Route 19 bus.  https://www.metrotransit.org/c-line-construction.  Penn is currently CLOSED in 3 locations between Lowry and Highway 55.  https://www.metrotransit.org/penn.   So plan your trips on Penn carefully!

Current Penn Ave Active Detours (Last Update 7/18/18):

  • Penn & 43rd Segment – 42nd Ave to 44th Ave – Detour to Oliver Ave N (Through September 2018)
  • Penn & West Broadway Segment  – 21st Ave to 23rd Ave (Through October 2018)
  • 26th Ave to Lowry Reconstruction Segment – 26th Ave to Lowry Ave (Through October 2018)
  • Penn & 36th/Dowling Segment – 35th Ave to 39th Ave (Through August 2018)

Lyndale Ave Construction (update 7/16/18)

Signs went 7/16/18 announcing that Lyndale Ave will be closed North of the Webber Parkway beginning July 23.    It is not currently clear what this is for – but most likely it is continued work on the water Vault construction.   For more information see: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/cip/completedprojects/WCMSP-190133

 Humboldt Crossing Project

In Mid-summer 2018 (Last known anticipated start date is July 23), Hennepin County is reconstructing the railroad crossing at Humboldt Avenue and 45th Ave N (Just north of Webber Parkway).  The project is only expected to take a few weeks but there will be some closures and detours.   Watch here and on the the WCNO Facebook Page for more up-to-date details.   See the Humboldt Crossing project website here:  https://www.hennepin.us/humboldtavenue

44th Avenue Reconstruction

Yes, you read that correctly!   44th Ave North between Lyndale and Penn Ave N is also being reconstructed.   Don’t worry, it’s not happening THIS summer.   But it is coming up soon.  The project is expected to begin in 2020.   Currently Hennepin County engineers are hard at work doing preliminary planning and gathering public comments.

What to do?  Watch for a variety of opportunities for public feedback in the coming months.  Here is the 44th Ave Project Website:  https://www.hennepin.us/webberparkway   and here is their Facebook page which has some updates. https://www.facebook.com/Webber44Engagement/

Note also that this project on 44th Ave North is taking into account the planned Metro Transit D line project.  Similar to the C line project on Penn Avenue (which is replacing the Route 19 bus, see above), the D line is aimed at largely replacing the Route 5 bus with a Bus Rapid Transit model to bring faster and more frequent service between Brooklyn Center, Downtown, and the Mall of America.   https://www.metrotransit.org/d-line-project

I-94/I-35W Construction

The ramp from I94 Eastbound to I35W southbound is closed for the summer.    Plan accordingly!  https://www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/i94brooklyncntr/

 Brooklyn Boulevard Reconstruction

Brooklyn Blvd is being reconstructed between 49th Ave N and Bass Lake Road in the summer of 2018.  Here is the project website: http://www.cityofbrooklyncenter.org/index.aspx?NID=1190

It has also come to our attention that in 2023 or 2024 Brooklyn Blvd/Osseo Road will be reconstructed from Penn Ave to 49th Ave.    But that’s a little far out- so don’t worry too much yet.  Maybe by then you will have given up your car.
